How do we keep our baby safe in the water?

  • HealthHub: “Always have an adult within an arm’s length of your child in the pool to provide prompt help if needed”.
  • “Flotation devices are NOT life-saving devices”. Hold your baby, even with a float.
  • Neck floats: the US FDA has a safety notice titled “Do Not Use Baby Neck Floats Due to the Risk of Death or Injury”. We found no Singapore guidance.
  • Water temperature: “Check the temperature of the water with your elbow before bathing the baby. It should be warm and comfortable, not hot”.
  • “Keep your child out of the water during bad weather such as thunder, lightning or rain”.
  • After vaccinations, or if your baby is unwell: we found no official Singapore advice on swimming. Ask your doctor.
  • “Babies can drown in as little as 5cm of water”. Stay with your baby at every step.
